Taiwanese taekwondo star shines with silver in Korea
Taipei, May 2 (CNA) Taiwanese taekwondo athlete Yang Shu-chun produced her personal best record at the World Taekwondo Championships in the female-49kg category to take a silver medal Monday.

Yang garnered solid matchup wins at the 2011 World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) World Taekwondo Championships before losing to China's Wu Jingyu 6-2 in the final.

She is competing internationally for the first time since her three-month suspension by the WTF last December.

The 25-year-old suffered a disqualification that drew condemnation from many Taiwanese during her opening bout at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou on Nov. 17. The referee accused her of wearing extra electronic sensors in her socks.

However, video replays of the match later showed, that she had removed the two extra sensors before entering the ring, as instructed by the referee.

On Dec. 21, the South Korea-based WTF banned Yang from competition for three months because she staged a sit-down protest and refused to leave the mat following her disqualification.

The federation also fined Taiwan's taekwondo association US$50,000 for Yang's protest and suspended her coach, Liu Tsung-ta, for 20 months for his protest of the disqualification, in which he tried to plead Yang's case.

Yang told the media before she headed to South Korea that she "would not overthink" and would simply concentrate on giving her best performance in each contest.

Her ultimate goal, however, is to win at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

Ho Feng-yen, the secretary general of Taiwan's taekwondo association, said earlier in the day that he is optimistic that Yang will win the World Qualification Tournament scheduled for June 30 in Azerbaijan.

He said Yang's winning of the silver medal proves her techniques can stand trial on the international level.

Ho also said Yang did not appear at her best in this tournament because she had been out of training for some time. Not until early March did she start practicing again.

Meanwhile, Taiwanese taekwondo athlete Wei Chen-yang took the bronze medal in the male 58kg category. (By Lee Yu-cheng and Ann Chen) enditem/ly
