Tokyo, Aug. 29 (CNA) Taipei won one silver and three bronze medals in judo and a bronze medal in badminton at the three-day Asia Junior Sports Exchange Games that concluded in Tokyo on Sunday.
Taiwan's team from Taipei, along with teams from 15 other Asian cities, competed for titles in the two sports.
In the team badminton event, where teams played five matches against each other (one each men's and women's single, men's and women's double, and mixed doubles) , Taipei swept through the preliminary round with 5-0 whitewashings of defending champion Jakarta and Yangon.
But it lost to Kuala Lumpur 3-1 in the semifinals before defeating South Korea 3-1 for the bronze medal after winning the men's and women's doubles and men's singles.
Although Taipei failed to capture a medal in the judo team event, Kuo Yi-ting from Taipei Datong High School won a silver medal in the women's under 70kg class and three students from Taipei Dali High School won bronze medals in the men's under 60kg, under 66kg, and open weight classes, respectively.
For most of the athletes from Taipei, the event was their first opportunity to compete abroad, and the team's coaches were positive about the athletes' performance and said had they gained valuable experience from the trip.
The three-day Games, hosted by Tokyo Sports Benefits Corporation, drew teams from 16 Asian cities: Bangkok, Delhi, Hanoi, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei, Yangon, Ulan Bator, Hong Kong, Macau, Astana, Vientiane, and Tokyo.
