Taiwanese Go player receives title of Oza
Tokyo, Feb. 7 (CNA) Taiwanese Go player Cho U, who is based in Japan, was conferred Monday with the title of Oza after winning three consecutive championships for the second time.

Cho, 31, who currently holds the major Go titles of Kisei, Oza and Judan, was presented with a certificate, a trophy and prize money of 14 million Japanese yen (US$163,000) at a ceremony in Tokyo that was attended by around 200 Japanese professional Go players.

Ryoki Sugita, chairman of Japan's Nikkei Inc., praised Cho's achievement and expressed hope that he will take the Honorary Oza title, the reward for managing to hold the Oza title for a straight five times or for winning a total of 10 times.

Describing Cho as "the pride of Taiwan, " Taiwan's representative to Japan, John Feng, noted that he has now attended 10 conferral ceremonies for the player and he expressed hope that the ancient board game, known as "weichi" in Taiwan, can help improve exchanges between Taiwan and Japan.

Cho for his part expressed his excitement at securing the title and he said he is currently focusing on defending his Kisei championship.

In 2009, he became the first and only person to hold five of the seven major titles at the same time -- Meijin, Judan, Tengen, Oza and Gosei -- since the ranking system was established in 1977.

After taking the Kisei from Japan's Yamashita Keigo last year, he became only the second player, along with Cho Chikun of South Korea, in Japanese Go history to successfully complete a "grand slam" by winning seven major titles. (By Mike Chang and Maia Huang) ENDITEM/J
