Taipei, Aug. 26 (CNA) A student from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) has won a "best of the best" prize in the communication category of the 2010 red dot design award -- the world's largest and most prestigious design competition, the university said Thursday.
Lee Pei-wen was recognized for her project "Eros, " a 3D animated film about a battle for life.
It was the first time that an animated film from Taiwan was chosen as a red dot "best of the best, " NTUST said.
The 4-minute film depicts the human gestation process through a video game setting. The main character, a combat aircraft named "Eros, " is transformed from a baby who keeps moving inside its mother's womb as it struggles against various obstacles that could block its birth.
Lee said her inspiration came from her elder sister's first pregnancy and the experience of her own mother, who once considered an abortion.
The obstacles faced by "Eros" during the adventure in the womb symbolize the various psychological and physical challenges that arise during pregnancy, Lee said.
"Eros" is also one of nine works that have been nominated for the "red dot: junior prize" which comes with a 10,000 euro award. The winner will be announced Dec. 8.
The red dot design award is presented by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany in three different categories: product design, communication design and design concept.
This year's communication design competition drew 6,369 entries from 44 countries, with 610 entries awarded a red dot for their design quality. The "best of the best" prizes are awarded to particularly outstanding design achievements, selected from among the red dot winners.
Besides Lee, four other NTUST students have also won red dot prizes this year. They are Kao Pei-wen, for "The Color of Mirrors;" Huang Chong-ming, for "Pimple;" Tsai Yun-chieh, for "Cafe de L'amour;" and Lu Hsuan-ying, for "Creation."
The winning projects will be shown at the red dot design museum on the premises of the Zollverein World Cultural Heritage site in Essen.
