Taiwanese illustrator wins gold at London International Awards
Taipei, Nov. 17 (CNA) In a competition against thousands of advertising works from around the globe in the 2010 London International Awards (LIA), Taiwanese illustrator Chen Chung-hung has won a gold trophy for four of his illustrations, the first Taiwanese to receive such an honor.

The LIA is an international competition that has honored excellence in advertising, design and digital media since 1985. The LIA received 13,562 submissions from 79 countries in this year's competition, but only 0. 6 percent of the entries won gold.

The four illustrations portray what happens in the office when the boss is away.

The work is a tribute to four other artists -- Nick Lam from Hong Kong, Tian It Ng from Singapore, Sonal Dabral from India and Polly Chu from China, according to Chen.

"I've always wanted to know what happens if the boss does not show up at the office, " 37-year-old Chen said in a press conference held in Taipei Wednesday.

Chen, who has been working as a freelance print illustrator in the advertising industry for the last 10 years, studies at the graduate school of fine arts at National Taiwan Normal University.

"It's interesting to look into the concept of `presence' with `absence,'" he said.

His winning illustrations show a Chinese office filled with spider webs, an Indian office turned into a party for office workers dressed in swimsuits, a Hong Kong office transformed into a gambling den and a Singaporean office full of drunk people counting money.

Chen has captured a number of international accolades, including a New York Festival award, a D&AD award and a Mobius Advertising award. (By Hermia Lin) ENDITEM/J
