Taiwan wins big at Malaysian invention show
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, May 21 (CNA) A Taiwanese team consisting of 230 people, including students and company representatives, has won 124 medals in the 2011 International Invention Innovation Technology Exhibition (ITEX) in Malaysia, according to results released Saturday by the organizer.

The team grabbed 56 gold, 56 silver and 12 bronze medals in the event, held May 20-22 in Kuala Lumpur.

A total of 722 inventions from 14 countries were submitted for competition in the exhibition, Malaysia's largest annual invention show organized by the Malaysian Invention & Design Society.

Taiwanese participants included 135 students from 37 schools across Taiwan, ranging from elementary schools to colleges, and 40 representatives from 14 companies.

A water trap for potted plants was among the Taiwanese inventions that won the top prizes.

The automatic water replenishment device, equipped with a chip, is able to sense the moisture level of the soil of a potted plant, before it collects the amount of water needed from the air to nourish the plant.

It was invented by Chiu Cheng-wei and Liu Po-cheng from the National Erh-lin Industrial and Commercial Vocational High School in central Taiwan's Changhua County.

Taiwan submitted more than 160 inventions for the competition this year.

It won 18 gold, 22 silver and 4 bronze medals in last year's competition. (By Sun Tien-mei and Christie Chen) Enditem/cs
