Taiwan students bag 9 medals in World Robot Olympiad
Manila, Nov. 7 (CNA) Competing against top contestants from around the world, teams from Taiwan won nine medals in various competition categories at this year's World Robot Olympiad (WRO) which ended in Manila on Sunday.

The WRO is an event where science, technology and education bring together young people from all over the globe to apply their creativity and problem-solving skills in challenging and educational robot competitions. The contest, first held in Singapore in 2004, is conducted in three different age groups: elementary, junior and senior.

Up against 1,200 students from 22 other countries, Taiwan's 80 members of 24 teams representing various private and public schools, took home one silver medal in the open category for senior-high school students and one bronze in the elementary open category.

The award of Most Popular Robot in the junior-high category also went to Taiwan.

While receiving the awards at a ceremony, Taiwan's winning teams raised the ROC national flag, and even though they stood beside their counterparts from China, no conflicts were reported, officials attending the event said.

Taiwanese students taking part at the Olympiad also introduced robots specially designed to showcase Taiwan's unique customs and cultures in accordance with the 2010 theme, "Robots Promote Tourism.

It was the first time for the Philippines to host the event. In the wake of the Aug. 26 bus hostage tragedy in Manila that claimed the lives of eight Hong Kong tourists, the organizers had worried unnecessarily that foreign participants would stay away out of security concerns.
