Taiwanese wins gold in international culinary competition
Brussels, Nov. 20 (CNA) A teacher from central Taiwan won a gold medal at the 2010 Villeroy and Boch Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg Saturday, taking the honor in the individual culinary category.

Yang Chun-ya, who teaches at National Taichung Special Education School for the Hearing Impaired, impressed the judges with a taro-based vase on which she sculptured lovely orchids and four Chinese characters meaning "prosperous and safe."

The artistic vase won her a gold medal in the individual culinary category at the quadrennial competition, which drew more than 1,000 competitors from over 50 countries.

Yang, a member of the Formosa Culinary Association, had previously won a gold medal representing Taiwan at a 2008 international IKA culinary competition in Germany in the object display category.

Two fellow members of the association, Wu Sung-lien and Wei Shih-chieh, will compete in other categories of the Luxembourg event Sunday.

Wu is a chef with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Washington, D.C. Wei won the top honor at an Asia-wide competition in Thailand last year.
