TTL has big medal haul in international competition
Berlin, May 31 (CNA) State-owned Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp. (TTL) was showered with honors at the prestigious Monde Selection awards this past weekend, winning dozens of medals and five special trophies for its beer, spirits, cigarettes, and cosmetics.

TTL received a total of 43 medals, including 10 grand gold medals-- the highest possible honor -- and 17 gold medals. The other 16 were silver and bronze medals.

TTL Chairman Wei Po-tao and Vice President Lin Tzann-feng were at the award ceremony in Wiesbaden, Germany Sunday to collect the awards on behalf of the company -- Taiwan's biggest maker and distributor of alcohol and cigarettes.

"The awards are expected to help TTL further open markets in the United States, Japan, Southeast Asia and mainland China," Lin said.

The Monde Selection awards represent a seal of quality for TTL products because the quality screening standards in Europe, known for prioritizing environmental protection and food hygiene, are regarded as stricter than those in the U.S., Lin said.

Aside from its haul of medals, TTL also received "International High Quality Trophies" for its canned Gold Medal Taiwan Beer, Yulu Burdock Wine, Vinata Essence Intense Hydration Anti-Wrinkle cream, Vinata Night Cream Revival Anti-Wrinkle cream, and Long Life Classic cigarettes.

The trophy is given to products that have received grand gold or gold medals for three consecutive years.

Monde Selection, founded in Belgium in 1961, is considered one of the most important food and beverage certification institutions in the world. It screens the quality of more than 2,000 different products from over 80 countries every year.
