Taipei, July 5 (CNA) Two open water swim events will take place in Taiwan's Kinmen County at the end of July, including one covering 7,000 meters from Lieyu Islet in the county to Xiamen in China, Kinmen County authorities announced Monday.

The swim between Kinmen and Xiamen will take place for an eighth year this year on July 31, and a total of 100 two-swimmer relay teams are expected to compete for total prize money of 300,000 Chinese yuan (US$44,984.89), the county government said.

The 7-kilometer race is held from Xiamen to Kinmen in odd-numbered years and from Kinmen to Xiamen even-numbered years.

The 100 teams, including 40 from Taiwan or composed of overseas Chinese, and 60 from China (including Hong Kong and Macau) were decided after a selection process in May.

Last year's winners, Wong Jingwei (翁境煒) and Han Shuo (韓爍) from China, finished the 7-kilometer swim in 1 hours and 36 minutes, according to the county government.

Before the July 31 swim between Kinmen and Xiamen, the county government will also hold a non-competitive swim event in Liaoluo Bay on the south coast of the main Kinmen Island on July 30.

Over 2,000 people have signed up for the July 30 event, which will require them to swim 1,500 kilometers into the sea before turning back for another 1,500 kilometers to the shore.

The Liaoluo Bay race, now in its 14th year, along with the race between Xiamen and Kinmen, were only made possible after the county saw military restrictions on seaside activities ease in recent years in the former battleground, the county government said.

In 2014, the military force stationed on the island formally completed efforts to clear tens of thousands of land mines on the islands that were once a front line in Taiwan's resistance to Chinese aggression during the Cold War.

Now daily ferries run between Kinmen and Xiamen, and a project is under construction for Kinmen to receive water supplied from Xiamen.
