Taipei, July 31 (CNA) Two brothers from New Taipei won a sea swim held between Taiwan's Kinmen and China's Xiamen Sunday, the first time Taiwanese swimmers have taken the title in the annual event's eight-year history.

Cho Chen-chi (卓承齊) and his younger brother Cho Pei-chi (卓沛齊), both senior high school students from New Taipei, finished the 7,000-meter race in 1 hour and 33 minutes to grab the title as champion, according to organizers.

A total of 90 pairs of swimmers from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as overseas Chinese contestants took part in this year's event.

Before the race began, Kinmen County Magistrate Chen Fu-hai (陳福海) said the islands that were once a front line battleground because of their close proximity to China now play a key role as a messenger of peace.

Chen also said if the proposed cable car project between Kinmen and Xiamen receives the support of the government, it would create a bright outlook for the local tourism market.

Cho Chen-chi, who took part in the race in 2014, said he felt a different atmosphere this time, and felt a good vibe when partnering with his brother.

The race is conducted by pairs of two-swimmer relay teams, with the first swimmer starting from Kinmen's Lieyu islet and then changing hands to the other swimmer waiting at the islet of Binglangyu, who will swim to the finish line in Xiamen.

Cho Chen-chi said he felt confident when he saw his brother starting in the lead position, while he managed to maintain a steady pace to reach the finish line first, although he briefly fell behind some Chinese rivals.

The Cho brothers, who competed in the men's A division for swimmers aged 30 or below, will win a cash prize of 25,000 Chinese yuan (US$3,765.46).

Yin Molin (尹默林) and Liu Bo (劉博) of China won the men's B division for swimmers aged 31 and above, while their fellow countrywomen Li Yilin and Chen Ci took the title in the women's division.
