Taipei, April 16 (CNA) Kinmen County government launched K Bike, a public rental bicycle system on Sunday, encouraging residents and visitors to cycle around the 150-square-kilometer island county which is located about 6 km from China's Fujian Province.

The launch ceremony was held at Zhongzheng Park in Jinhu Township, with Deputy Kinmen County Magistrate Wu Cheng-tien (吳成典), Legislator Yang Cheng-wu (楊鎮浯) and Tsai Hsi-hu (蔡西湖), head of Jinhu Township, taking a test ride around nearby Tai Lake, a 40-hectare manmade lake next to the park.

There are 29 K Bike kiosks (stations) around the island at 26 sites, with 500 bicycles in service. Users can rent bikes at one kiosk and return them to any other kiosk 24 hours a day.

Users can use the K Bike system free of charge for the first month. After that county will offer the first hour free of cost and rental of a K Bike at NT$10 (US$0.33) for the first 30 minutes and up to NT$150 a day.

Users can pay the rental fee with a credit card, Taipei's EasyCard, Kaohsiung's I-Pass or China Union Pay card, a card issued by a Chinese state-owned financial services corporation and held by most Chinese tourists at home and abroad. One card can be used to rent a maximum of four bikes at a time, said the county government.

Kinmen and Matsu islands have been administered by the Republic of China (Taiwan) government since it was defeated by the Chinese communists and moved to Taiwan in 1949.
