Taipei, Sept. 26 (CNA) The 2017 Kinmen Mid-Autumn Dice Game for Mooncakes (Bo-Bing) event has been progressing in a boisterous atmosphere at the Qing Dynasty Kinmen Military Headquarters, with a large number of participants from both Taiwan proper and China.

The event, also known as "gambling for moon cakes," opened on Sept. 20 with TV host and actor Hsu Nai-lin (徐乃麟) and Kinmen Deputy Magistrate Wu Cheng-tien (吳成典) announcing the official opening.

On the opening day, the organizers of the event welcomed the first arrivals from Xiamen and Quanzhou in China's Fujian Province at Shuitou Pier, while participants from Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Chiayi and Kaoshiung arrived at Kinmen Airport.

Hsu noted that he visited Kinmen many times when he was doing his military service in the entertainment battalion, including once when he was stuck on the island for longer than expected due to heavy fog, a common occurrence.

He said he has also been to the island to film military educational films.

It has been 20 years since I last visited and Kinmen has changed a great deal, but "my heart has never changed," he went on.

Hsu and Wu, along with Kinmen County's Transportation and Tourism Bureau Director Chen Mei-ling (陳美齡) and five township representatives, threw the first dice to open the Bo-Bing event, which attracted a large crowd.

In the Bo-Bing game, players are given three chances to roll six dice. If a four is rolled, they win a lucky prize and progress to the next level. At levels two and three, they receive three rolls of the six dice and need two fours and three fours to win, respectively. The level two prize is a discount voucher for local shops and level three is a Kinmen souvenir. Level four requires four fours and winners receive a commemorative coin.

The Bo-Bing event and a series of other activities to mark the Mid-Autumn Festival are slated to run through Oct. 4.

The game was invented by soldiers under Koxinga (鄭成功) during the Mid-Autumn Festival, with the winning prizes being moon cakes.
