Kinmen magistrate opens election campaign office

Taipei, Oct. 18 (CNA) Independent Kinmen Magistrate Chen Fu-hai (陳福海) inaugurated his election campaign office for the Nov. 24 local elections at Kinmen County Stadium on Oct. 10, attracting over 3,000 supporters, including two tiny opposition political parties.

At the beginning of the opening ceremony, New Party Chairman Yok Mu-ming (郁慕明) and For Public Good Party Chairman Chen Po-kuang (陳柏光) presented gifts to the magistrate, wishing him a successful re-election.

Yok said that Kinmen serves as a platform for the development of relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and should shoulder the mission in the pursuit of happiness and well-being for ethnic Chinese people.

Chen for his part praised the magistrate for his administrative achievements during his term.

In return, Chen Fu-hai thanked the two party chairmen for their support and said that what he keeps in mind are his fellow county residents rather than the fierce election competition between the pan-blue and pan-green camps.

Looking back at his political career over the past 30 years, Chen noted that he served as an elected representative, a township chief, a county councilor and legislator before becoming magistrate. Regardless of his position, he has strived to seek the central government's support for the development of public infrastructure in the offshore county and for the benefits of local residents.

Chen said the Kinmen county government has undertaken a number of infrastructure projects over the past four years, such as the construction of roads, as well as water and electricity supply systems, and plans to invest NT$10 billion (US$323.3 million) in school buildings and education.

He also called on supporters to back his proposal to boost bilateral ties with China's Fujian Province through what he called "three new links."

The "water link," one of the three new links, involves Fujian providing Kinmen with water for 30 years under an agreement that Taiwan and China signed in 2015, according Chen.

It is followed by an "electricity link" and "bridge link" between Kinmen and the Chinese province.

The magistrate also unveiled his ambitious 10 major construction projects plan for Kinmen, saying he plans to contract out these projects in two years if re-elected.
