Kinmen three mini-links passengers to reach 2 million this year

Taipei, June 3 (CNA) The number of passengers traveling between Taiwan's offshore Kinmen County and China via the three mini-links is expected to reach 2 million this year, up 10 percent year-on-year, according to Kinmen Magistrate Yang Cheng-wu (楊鎮浯).

Since the three mini-links were launched in 2001, the number of people traveling via the links had reached 10 million by 2013, Kinmen County Tourism Department data shows.

The department estimated that the total number will reach 20 million during the June 7-9 Dragon Boat Festival this year.

The three mini links refer to the commercial, transportation and postal exchanges between Kinmen, Matsu and China's coastal cities.

Yang told reporters at the immigration counter in Shuitou Harbor Saturday that he hopes the number will reach 30 million before his term ends in 2022.

Meanwhile, in an effort to boost local tourism, the Kinmen County government held a series of promotional campaigns May 27-June 1 with the distribution of gift bags for all the passengers on one lucky boat each day.

Witnessed by Kinmen government staff and reporters from both Taiwan and China at the crowded harbor, Cai Wenting (蔡雯婷) from China took away the biggest prize -- 20 free three mini-links tickets and a bottle of premium Kaoliang.

Cai, who was traveling to Kinmen for a day trip with two girlfriends, told reporters that the prize was completely unexpected.

Yang said that reaching the 2 million mark will be a remarkable milestone for Kinmen tourism.

While pledging to further improve the quality of tourism, Yang said it takes time to optimize harbor and infrastructure facilities.

Since Jan. 1, 2001, Taiwan and China have had direct trade, postal and transportation links, commonly known as the three mini-links, between the Taiwan-controlled island chains of Kinmen and Matsu, and the ports of Xiamen, Quanzhou and Fuzhou in China's Fujian Province.

Taiwan and China established direct flights and shipping links in 2008.
