Taipei, Aug. 16 (CNA) The Kinmen Mid-Autumn Mooncake Dice Game (Bo-Bing) Festival, featuring a dice game offering mooncakes and other prizes, will be held in Taiwan proper and outlying Penghu County for the first time, the Kinmen County government announced Friday.

From Aug. 31 to Sept. 15, passengers with outbound plane tickets to Kinmen will be eligible to participate in the dice games, which will take place at Taipei Songshan Airport, Taichung International Airport, Kaohsiung International Airport, Chiayi Airport, Tainan Airport and Penghu Airport simultaneously, according to the county government.

In the dice game, players are given three chances to roll six dice. If six fours are rolled, they win a bottle of Kinmen kaoliang liquor, a celebrated alcoholic beverage, the county government said, adding that mooncakes will be given to players who roll a designated number.

In addition to the dice games, stories about Bo-Bing will be told live on stage at the Kinmen Qing Dynasty Military Headquarters in Jincheng Township, where tourists can also try on ancient costumes, it said.

The idea of tossing dice to compete for mooncakes is said to date back hundreds of years ago to the Ming Dynasty, when loyalist Zheng Chenggong (鄭成功) held naval drills in Xiamen and his associate Hong Xu set up the game during the Mid-Autumn Festival to relieve the soldiers' homesickness.

Six dice were used to play the game, representing the different levels or "degrees" of the old imperial exam system.

Mooncakes, a staple during the Mid-Autumn Festival, became the main prize, but other prizes have been added over the years in the version of the game played in Kinmen County.
