Kinmen, Sep.17 (CNA) Kinmen County Magistrate Yang Cheng-wu (楊鎮浯) met with Chiayi County Magistrate Weng Chang-liang (翁章梁) on Thursday to exchange views on topics of mutual concern and to seek potential cooperation.

Leading a delegation of county officials to attend a three-day meeting held at the Ever Rich Golden Lake Hotel in Kinmen, Weng discussed various topics with Yang such as land distribution, demographic changes, environmental protection, transitional justice, horseshoe crab and otter conservation and many others.

Yang praised Chiayi County has won the Golden Award of the EPA's Resource Recycling Performance Evaluation for several consecutive years. The county has devoted a lot of resources to pushing forward the circular economy; moreover, it also has developed many unique and innovative methods in handling waste disposal and promoting environmental education which are well worth learning from.

Yang also introduced Kinmen’s successful models such as sorting and recycling the waste at the source; compost, made with material from the high-speed food waste fermentation system, could be reused in planting and environmental beautification, as well as processing waste styrofoam with special solutions.

Weng praised Kinmen County has set an example of breeding horseshoe crabs. As the only breeding habitat left on the main island of Taiwan, he expects to learn the experience and to have an opportunity to get juvenile horseshoe crabs from Kinmen to release them to the wild in Chiayi, as well as to co-organize exhibitions or seminars together to enhance public knowledge on ecological protection.

In addition, Weng suggested a cross-border cooperative model, which Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Inc. (KKL) could purchase sorghum from the Chiayi County Farmers’ Association at a reasonable price. Apart from revitalizing the use of agricultural land, it also creates a win-win-win for local governments, the company, and farmers.

With a mission of providing high quality service to the public, the officials of two parties have deliberated on promoting various policies. Yang and Weng both expect to enhance cooperation in order to create mutual benefit for their own counties. (Sponsored Content)
