NCKU, CUHK set up joint research center for positive social science

(中央社訊息服務20151208 18:21:02)A joint research center for positive social science was set up today at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, aiming to promote community building, empowerment and rejuvenation, humanized technology, civic virtues, and personal and collective wellbeing.

The joint efforts were initiated by NCKU and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung and NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su on behalf of their institutes signed a MoU on establishment of the joint research center on the afternoon of December 7.

We have this beautiful friendship with CUHK for at least ten years, said President Su at the signing ceremony.

Both NCKU and CUHK had for many years been pioneers in positive social science research and recognized the longstanding goodwill of the two universities to co-develop areas of research excellence, according to President Su.

Vice-Chancellor and President Sung said, its’ timely to establish a research center for positive social science since there is too much negative feeling and criticism in our society.

The joint research center for positive social science will be among the first, if not the first, research center of its kind in Asia and possibly globally, said NCKU Professor Tai Hua who is also the director of the research center for humanities and social sciences at NCKU.

Hua explained that positive social science includes issues of community rebuilding, aging, and multiple facets of well-being.

The research initiatives will cover intellectual impact, social contribution, educational impact and economic value through contributions to humanized technology development.

After the signing ceremony, a panel discussion participated by committee members from both universities was held to explore mutual interests in positive social science, biomedical engineering, cultural neuroscience, literary studies, energy and engineering.
