(中央社訊息服務20210607 16:56:49)International credit agency S&P Global ESG released its “The Sustainability Yearbook 2021.” Taiwan Mobile was awarded a Gold Class award for the first time, making it the world’s best telecom service provider for its achievements in sustainability. It was selected from more than 7,000 large companies from 61 industries, and this award symbolizes the acknowledgement and appreciation the world holds toward the sustainability efforts Taiwan Mobile has been putting into.

“We will strive to incorporate ESG (environmental, social, governance) criteria into our corporate DNA in response to the high expectations of all stakeholders,” Tsai said.

“As we stride toward the age of 5G, Taiwan Mobile will actively reduce carbon emissions, through building solar power plants, purchasing green energy and investing in sustainable energy,” Tsai said.

“We plan to invest 4.2MW (megawatts) in a wind power plant which is expected to generate 13 million kilo-watt-hour of electricity in its first year. We look forward to turning Taiwan Mobile into a trailblazer in cloud services and green datacenters, with promises to our cloud-based data centers going completely green by the year 2030.”

“By the time, green energy will make up 20 percent of Taiwan Mobile’s total energy consumption. The company will continue to observe the United States’ and other countries’ policies on climate, actively taking measures in response to the effects of climate change, and providing a helping hand to realize the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement,” Tsai said.

Since 2018, Taiwan Mobile has been a Silver Class title holder in the sustainability yearbook for three consecutive years. It has even further advanced into a Gold Class holder this year, gaining a full score in its category of climate strategy, which fully reflects the effort made by Taiwan Mobile in the reduction of carbon emissions.

In line with its own Science-Based Targets (SBT), Taiwan Mobile aims to reduce carbon emissions in scope 1 and scope 2 by 30 percent in 2030 comparing to 2016, while reducing scope 3 emissions by 15 percent compared to 2018, becoming the first telecom service company in Taiwan to pass the review from Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

Furthermore, through the “recycle used optical fiber initiative,” Taiwan Mobile has been able to come up with an active strategy with reusing these materials, while suggesting the government sector should make a policy change to help this initiative come to fruition.

With regard to social responsibility, Taiwan Mobile has initiated several programs, including the “Coding Fun” program, in which Taiwan Mobile spreads the digital knowledge of programming languages, coding and application technology to school children in rural parts of Taiwan through means of workshops and games.

Taiwan Mobile has also hosted a” myAngel” caregiver program, which utilizes IoT technology to link watches, apps and communication software for the elderly, bringing care, prevention and assistance into one system that prevents precarious situations from happening.

In the field of corporate governance, Taiwan Mobile pulls itself to the standard of renowned global companies, and has proven to have maximized the benefits of its stakeholders.

2020 marks Taiwan Mobile’s fourth time inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI), while it again took the title as the world’s best telecom service company in DJSI World Index that same year and was selected as a climate change A List enterprise by the CDP for the second year.

Last year, Taiwan Mobile was certified as a Prime class company by ISS ESG for the third year, and ranked 10th in its Taiwan Select ESG Top 30 Index. It also won the second prize for its “great improvement” in the overall ESG performance made in the recent three years.

Since 2018, Taiwan Mobile has been a constituent stock in the FTSE4Good TIP Taiwan ESG Index, clearly indicating that its outstanding performance in sustainable growth has gained global recognition.
