(中央社訊息服務20251002 16:35:23)National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) received a total of seven accolades at the 2025 Asia-Pacific and Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards (APSAA & TSAA), recognizing four exemplary projects under the university’s University Social Responsibility (USR) and sustainability portfolio. The honors include one Silver and two Bronze awards from the APSAA, as well as three Gold and one Bronze awards from the TSAA, affirming NYCU’s role as a leader in integrating the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into education, research, and community impact.

This year’s awards attracted 115 submissions from across the Asia-Pacific region, including the United States, Honduras, Italy, Switzerland, and the Philippines. NYCU’s initiatives were recognized for their real-world results in addressing pressing societal challenges through interdisciplinary research and cross-sector collaboration.

Professor Sirirat Sae Lim, Executive Director of the Office of Sustainability and Social Responsibility at NYCU, accepts the award on behalf of the university’s winning teams.

Project 1: Smiles for All, Powered by Technology-Led by Assoc. Prof. Ding-Han Wang
APSAA SDG3 Silver | TSAA SDG3 Gold

Building on NYCU’s four-decade tradition of providing dental care in underserved communities, this project integrates AI-powered oral health risk prediction and digital learning modules. The result is a scalable, tech-driven oral healthcare model that promotes preventive health literacy, digital inclusion, and tangible progress toward SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being.

Project 2: The Brightest “Tribal Star” in the Night Sky-Led by Prof. Yiing-Mei Liou
APSAA SDG3 Bronze | TSAA SDG3 Gold

Focusing on long-term care in Indigenous communities, this initiative blends tribal language, cultural practices, and smart healthcare tools—such as music-based seated rehabilitation, pain visualization cards, and sensor systems—to create culturally sensitive, community-rooted care models. The program addresses aging, healthcare accessibility, and supports vulnerable populations through innovative design and local collaboration.

Project 3: Negative Carbon, Zero Carbon—Net Zero Emission for Carbon-Led by Assoc. Prof. Sung-Fu Hong
APSAA SDG13 Bronze | TSAA SDG13 Bronze

Targeting SDG 13 – Climate Action, this project focuses on negative carbon technologies, including carbon capture, conversion, and reuse. The team works closely with industry and integrates the research into higher education and campus sustainability initiatives. The goal: to reduce existing atmospheric CO₂ and support Taiwan’s energy transition with scalable, policy-influencing solutions.

Project 4: Inclusive Domain: Sixth Fuel Factory and Touqian River—Led by Prof. Wen-Shu Lai
TSAA SDG11 Gold

An extension of NYCU’s “Hsinchu Living Museum” launched in 2018, this project revitalizes the former Sixth Naphtha Cracking Plant site by integrating historical preservation, ecological restoration, and civic participation. Through walking courses, citizen science, and interdisciplinary workshops, it forges deep local identity and public engagement. Recognized by international media and award bodies, the initiative demonstrates how urban-rural sustainability can be rooted in both culture and nature.

Prof. Sirirat Sae Lim, Executive Director of NYCU’s Office of Sustainability and Social Responsibility, emphasized that the awards reflect more than the dedication of individual teams—they affirm NYCU’s core mission: leveraging technology to meet societal needs.

“Looking forward, NYCU will continue to integrate interdisciplinary expertise, deepen community partnerships, and take concrete actions toward the SDGs,” Lin noted. “Universities have a responsibility to be drivers of sustainable change—and we are proud to lead by example.”
