The charity bike team of the Australia New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan (ANZCham) visited the Hualien County government on 25 March. Hualien County government was represented by Deputy County Mayor Yen Hsin-Chang, accompanied by the Director of the Research and Administration Department Wu Kun-Ru, and Deputy Director of the Tourism Department Lin Chia-Chang. To express the warm welcome from County Mayor Hsu Chen-Wei, a special Indigenous slow food meal was set up at the supply station to promote friendly exchanges between the Hualien County government and international investors.

Members of this charity round-island bike tour come from countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States, and Germany, spanning industries such as finance, semiconductors, energy, and information. They specifically chose to ride bicycles and engage in charity work in the Hualien and Taitung areas.

Deputy County Mayor Yen Hsin-Chang pointed out that County Mayor Hsu Chen-Wei is committed to making Hualien a healthy city, making it a gym for everyone, including building complete bicycle lanes, fitness equipment, and venues. The choice of Hualien by ANZCham’s charity bike team highlights Hualien as the best decision for a bicycle-friendly city.

Deputy County Mayor Yen also expressed his expectation to share the beauty of Hualien with every visitor and hoped that everyone could take home healthy and beautiful memories. He also welcomed everyone to continue investing in Hualien in the future, jointly promoting local development.

ANZCham CEO Glenn Lio stated that both New Zealand’s indigenous culture and Hualien’s indigenous culture are derived from the Southern Island culture, making today’s visit more meaningful. He particularly introduced the investment situation of chamber members from New Zealand, Australia, and other countries in Hualien and Taiwan, involving finance, energy, semiconductor AI technology, fitness, and other fields, demonstrating the importance of the ANZCham to Hualien and Taiwan, and looking forward to expanding cooperation and exchanges with Hualien in the future.

Co-chair of ANZCham and Director of Woodpecker Learning, Peter Sutton, also shared his joy of working and living in Taiwan, emphasizing the importance of today’s event. He expressed great honor in contributing to Taiwan, especially Hualien, through such activities, praising Hualien for not only its beauty but also its vitality.

County Mayor Hsu Chen-Wei visited Hamilton, New Zealand last July and signed a memorandum of cooperation with Mayor Paula Southgate and the Tainui Waka Tourism Incorporated. This event further deepened the cultural exchanges and cooperation between Hualien and New Zealand.

The ANZCham has regularly chosen Hualien as the venue for its charity bike activities since 2018 and is expected to visit again in 2027, bringing more attention and support to the remote areas of Hualien.

The Hualien County government stated that it will continue to strive to improve urban infrastructure construction, focus on cultural exchanges, international cooperation, and other aspects of development, hoping to create more international exchange opportunities, share the beauty of Hualien with the world, and also welcome international friends to travel and invest in Hualien, witnessing the prosperity and development of this land together.

The distinguished guests attending the event also included 29 foreign business leaders, senior executives, and diplomats who are the chamber’s members, including John Duthie, Head of Research & Analysis of ANZ Bank, Scott Williams, Managing Director of PEI Consultants, Van Hoang, Chairman of Baseload Power Taiwan, John Madew, Trade and Investment Commissioner of the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, and Achilles Yeh, Director of the Trade and Investment Promotion Section, Embassy of the Kingdom of Eswatini.
